Waitematā Station - Auckland’s transportation centre
In an earlier post, I provided some background about the major renovation and re-purposing of the old Central Post Office building. The building is now home to the Britomart Railway Station.
Britomart Station was recently renamed as Waitematā (Britomart) Station in recognition of its location within Waitematā Harbour, Auckland’s major access to the sea. In addition to serving as the transportation centre for Auckland’s rail lines to its suburbs, Waitematā Station will also function, once the massive construction project has been completed, as the northern access point for its City Rail Link.
With today’s photograph, I wish to celebrate not only my love of monumental public and commercial architecture but also the light of late afternoons in urban settings. Casting off long shadows and stark contrasts of light and dark, afternoon light presents to photographers rich visual canvases. In today’s photographic entry, I am especially fond of the dappled light that caresses the entrance facade of Waitematā Station as well as the interplay of shadow and light on the tile work of Te Komititanga Square.
