afternoon light - Durham Street East
As summer approaches and the sun moves high in the sky, Auckland's alleys and lanes in mid-afternoon are punctuated with dramatic interplays of light and shadow.
The sharp contrasts in foreground and background lighting also create powerful silhouettes.
The narrow passage, with its marked differences in the architectural styles between the buildings on either side of the street, combined with the striking presence of the building at the end of the street, give the photograph a dramatic and nostalgic feel of old world charm . . . if one ignores the rather contemporary look of the jersey on the man in the foreground.
Taken together, it makes for a powerful black and white photograph.
