Queen Street postures as Auckland’s echo

of London’s Bond Street.

There are the obvious trappings:

Gucci, Diro, Cartier, Bvlgaria, Coach.

I share a popular opinion that the effort is more parody --

silly, if not ignoble, pretence -- than convincing emulation.

The alleys and lanes of CBD Auckland tell a better tale

of what is quirky, interesting and enduring

about my adopted city

than its sullied thoroughfare paved with fool’s gold.
