Cornwall Park - Campbell Road backyard
A walk through Cornwall Park on New Year’s Eve brought me back to my former neighbourhood along Campbell Road in the One Tree Hill suburb of greater Auckland. In a three-generation household, my wife, our older daughter, her son and I lived in a large rental home that bordered the park.
The photograph above is of a backyard several houses down from where my family and I lived for more than three years.
A public trust bequeath by Sir John Logan Campbell in 1904, Cornwall Park stretches over 400 acres and includes the historically significant Māori settlement of One Tree Hill. A view from our former backyard (below) captures the view of One Tree Hill, including the obelisk that stands atop Sir John’s burial crypt, and the adjacent fields that serve as working farm lands for cattle and sheep grazing. It is also a favourite spot for walkers and joggers.
And while I love my new(ish) life as urban hipster with my wife in our harbour area apartment located in the Wynyard Quarter of Auckland Central, I had a very sentimental moment as I stood and considered the scene that I would eventually capture for the featured image of this post.
very cool. It looks like a hand painted postcard from the 1930's or 40's.
Such a contrast from the lush green and colourful landscape to the urban shapes and colours of the built waterfront. Both present such interesting complexity. Thanks for capturing these so thoughtfully.
