window - old Grey Lynn council chambers & firehouse
The old council chambers in Grey Lynn is a charming building. Much like the art gallery in Ballarat (Australia), which I featured in a previous post, the Grey Lynn municipal building is a fabulous expression of civic pride. Erected in 1889, the structure also served as the original location of the recently formed fire brigade.
While the building is worthy of a proper narrative, I was taken by one of its windows. Having had summer work in my early 20s for a third generation stone & brick mason, I am always eager to study fine examples of brick or stone masonry. My admiration for the architectural outline of the old council building yielded to the handsome design and polychromatic bravado of one of its windows.
Pane e Vino, an Italian restaurant, is the current occupant of the former council chambers.
