NZ Visual Diary - entry 231
street couplet
Today’s entries were captured during street walks across Auckland Central within the past few days.
The photographs reveal focused intensity, perhaps more purposefully in the image of the young musicians, but I think it a mistake to characterise the man’s expression as vacant stare. I find intent and not vacancy in his gaze.
The images are nonetheless oppositional. Our young performers assiduously play their stringed instruments on a Sunday afternoon for modest but tangible profit. Their dreams gather thoughts of great expectation.
The man at a bar window has traded remunerative performance for contemplative repose, a bottle of beer at arm’s reach on a Tuesday early afternoon. What lies ahead may be less clear.
