NZ Visual Diary - entry 288
The Diamond Shop - Ponsonby Road
As I have stated numerous times across previous entries of my photography blog, the geometric signatures of contemporary architecture appeal to me. I am fascinated by the architectural design penchant for arranging elemental geometric forms in segmented asymmetric patterns that nonetheless form a composite rendering characterised by dynamic tension held in balance. Think of the precariously placed blocks of a Jenga tower that sway but will not topple.
Add to that design scheme the illusion of floating block forms, of ponderous gravity that has been lightened by the use of recessed ground floor entrances and elegant placement of large — interior-revealing— recessed windows on upper floors.
I greatly admire the elegant simplicity of the architecture presented in today’s post, a design form that cleverly masks the complex task of co-mingling elements of visual dominance and spacial weightlessness.
