Te Oro Music & Arts Centre

The Te Oro Music & Arts Centre in the Auckland suburb of Glen Innes is a brilliant example of indigenous architecture. Commissioned by the Auckland Council and opened to the public in May of 2015, Te Oro is located within a neighbourhood of Glen Innes that includes several other community service entities, including its public library, community hall, the local branch of the Citizens Advice Bureau network and the Ruapōtaka Marae, making the area a vibrant hub for civic and cultural resources.
I would encourage followers of my blog to read about the architectural conceptualisation for Te Oro (here, here and here) because, among many other reasons, the development of the cultural centre was a textbook case of inclusive and collaborative involvement amongst governmental agency; architectural and construction entities; and community organisations, first among them the Ruapōtaka Marae and the Ngāti Pāoa iwi.
In previous blog entries, I have shared other examples of outstanding indigenous architecture (the entrance to the Auckland Art Gallery, Taumata o Kupe and the entrance to the Auckland High Court).
