night swim - Karanga Plaza Harbour Pool
On a walk back to my apartment in Wynyard Quarter after an evening meeting, I stopped at the Wynyard Crossing Bridge to watch a group of young people enjoying a chilly swim in the Karanga Plaza Harbour Pool.
The pool is the fortunate consequence of having a city mayor who loves to swim. Having seen harbour pools in other cities, our current mayor proposed the development of the tidal pool pictured in this image. The harbour pool, which sits at the eastern edge of the Karanga Plaza in Wynyard Quarter, offers three distinct aquatic activities: a free swim area featured in this photograph, four 33 metre swimming lanes and a jumping platform.
Farther east, but just beyond the swimming lanes, yachts traverse the Viaduct Basin under the Wynyard Crossing Bridge as they makes their way to or from the open waters of the Hauraki Gulf. It’s a grand sight to see a small or mid-sized yacht glide along the protective fence at the outer edge of the swimming lanes on a hot summer’s day when the pool is filled with swimmers.
