NZ Visual Diary - entry 412
bird’s eye view - Chief Post Office building
After an afternoon’s walkabout, I headed back home to Wynyard Quarter. To make one last photographic stop at Te Komititanga Square, I walked west along the south side of the former Chief Post Office, a building that now serves as the home of the Waitematā Train Station.
Under the lower-level windows along the west side were window aprons, accented by a keystone-like ornamental element, above building recesses. Two mates had claimed one recess as their lunch venue. Several pigeons decided to join the fun.
I enjoyed the playful tension between the weighty visual power of the window apron, with its formal solidity, and the softening effect of the lunch partners who elected to use the space as their urban picnic setting.
