young woman - Freyberg Place
A walk to the central branch of the Auckland Libraries is always for me an opportunity to stop and people-watch at Freyberg Place. Rarely, from a street photography perspective, am I disappointed.
I immediately spotted a young woman sitting on a set of steps closest to High Street. Her white socks and leggings were illuminated by strong mid-afternoon sunlight and I thought that the scene might do nicely as a black and white photograph. I could visualise the photographic impacts of the tonal contrast between her leggings and hat. I also liked the combined visual impact of strong diagonals from the positioning of her legs and the forward tilt of her body.
In the course of post-processing, I elected to retain the original colour rendering because I liked the soft pastel colouring of the upper steps and background building (the Ellen Melville Centre) and the hint of colour from her exposed thigh and partial facial profile.
Finally, the play of light on her right hand seemed to render nicely in colour.
